Welcome to an initial survey of urban codes currently identified in the Xelbourne habitat. It has been compiled in collaboration with experts from the Micronation of Ludea, adept at decoding urban space.

Ludeans are citizens of play. They come from a generation that has grown up with games, abstract machines and digital code. It has become second nature for them see their world in terms of models, systems, flows and processes.

Urban play alters our experience of the contemporary city. Over the past five years the Ludeans have developed an approach to urban spaces called ‘urban codemaking’ that draws upon the pictographic language of travelling hobos, the psychogeography of the situationists, the play community of the new games movement, the world building politics of micronations, and the technology of mixed and augmented realities.

Embedded in this field guide are excerpts from the Xelbourne survey that should assist you in locating urban codes in the wild.
